For most businesses, Internet Marketing or Digital Marketing as it is often called is a mix of Search Engine Optimisation, Social Media Marketing, Paid Search Marketing (Pay Per Click) and content marketing initiatives including PR, Blogging, Article submission and other Web 2.0 activities.
This is radically different from what internet marketing was when we first started our business in 2005. Not only has internet marketing changed but the internet itself is very different and continues to change.
It used to be ‘state of the art’ for a website to be developed in ‘frames’ and splash pages were all the rage. These are now only seen in websites from the ‘dark ages’ or in museums of internet history. Many internet marketers see “Social Media” as the be all and end all of internet marketing – some people still think Social Media is quite new, but web 2.0 has been with us for a good few years now and is actually well established.
The playing field for the internet marketer has also changed significantly. The competition for online marketing work is fierce compared to just a few years ago. Most website designers proclaim to also be ‘SEO experts’ even though their skills are around website development and HTML coding. Would you really want the typical ‘techie’ in charge of your marketing? Do they really understand know what split testing involves? Now we do not wish to decry anyone, we are just saying how the internet marketing world has changed.
Welcome to the new world
Dealing with change is one of the things that we all have to cope with from time to time and it will either create an excitement or a fear in a person, depending on their character and outlook. We live and work in an age where technology affects every aspect of our daily lives. We live in the information technology age. The information technology age has been with all of us since the 1980′s, earlier for some.
The history of the Internet
The internet was launched to the general public in late 1992 with just 50 or so websites online. Today there are millions of websites and blogs on the web about each and every subject. The internet has become an integral part of everyday life in just 18 years. Today most people blog, shop, communicate, research and even socialise online.
Tomorrow we will post the second and final part of this post.
