It is not that difficult to find a web design company or a website developer to develop an online application for you which will meet your needs.  The question is…do they understand how the search engines work? Do they have the knowledge and understanding to be able to optimise your website and make it search engine friendly? Do they really understand Search Engine Optimisation?

You most likely told your web designer that you wanted to appear on the search engines, and when people key in your company name to Google there you are on page one!  So what?

It is no ‘big deal’ or great accomplishment if you type in your company name in the search engines and you are ranked number 1.   What good does that do you? If people already know your company name they probably also know your website address so they are not likely to key your name in to the search engines.  What your goal should be is to be near the top of the search engine rankings for your keywords, i.e. the products and services that you sell!  If you can achieve this, people will find you on the search engines without typing in your company name but by searching for relevant keywords and keyword phrases that you are targeting.  In other words people will not need to know about you before they can find your products or services!

Most web designers/developers do not understand search engine marketing and nor do they have the critical knowledge required to be successful at SEO (Search Engine Optimisation).  Most web designers do not fully appreciate the vital role SEO plays when designing / developing a new website.

Most website developers have excellent technical / IT skills and they will be fabulous at creating the most complex of database structures and be able to build superb functionality into your website.  A good ‘techie’ with strong marketing skills however is a very rare breed indeed.  The smart website developers will outsource any SEO work to people like WSIIMS.

SEO considerations should be a key part of the planning process, from the very first moment.

There are two key elements to successful SEO – On-Page SEO and Off-Page SEO.

On-Page SEO covers most of the fundamentals such as the meta-data, page content, title tags, headings, keywords, meta descriptions, page content, image tags, linking structure, page content, xml sitemaps, etc.  All these factors play an important role in the on page optimisation of your website – did we mention page content?  Content is King and one of the primary on-page SEO factors.  Most websites are reasonably well optimised re meta-tags these days (although we do see many exceptions to this statement) so the quality of your content will be the difference between having an excellent website and having a poor one.

SEO doesn’t consist of just on page optimisation. Off -Page SEO plays a much bigger part than most think. Off-Page SEO consists of article submissions, press releases, social bookmarking, social media, blogs, link building, etc. All of these factors needs to be in place if you want people to find your website via the search engines.

But, my site looks great!

What is the point if you have the greatest, most beautiful looking website in the world if nobody knows about it? It is the same as if you had a magnificent new sports car and just left it standing in your garage because you don’t have any fuel in it!  Your website is your sports car, SEO is the fuel you need to make it work.

If you are in the process of designing / developing a new site, we strongly suggest that you speak with your web designer to make sure that they fully understand SEO and Search Engine Marketing.  Ask them to give you examples of websites they have developed that rank well in the search engines, and if they can’t, find someone like wsiims who can.
