Usually most of the SEO rumour mill is just somebody’s take on things but when several of the industry’s ‘leading lights’ start saying the same things it is time to start listening!

A brief update:

A couple of weeks ago, I watched a ‘Whiteboard Friday’ session that was hosted by Rand Frishkin, the much respected CEO of – one of the leading SEO software companies.

Rand predicted that over the next 6-12 months there would be a major shift away from ‘building’ links back towards ‘earning’ links, and suggested a number of ways to do this effectively including:

  • Joining and participating in online communities that are active and authentic and relevant to your business niche / sector.  By doing this people are likely notice you and link to your website content organically.
  • Actively participate in the social media networks that are appropriate to your business – i.e. those networks where your customers and prospects are likely to be.
  • Blogging on your own website and Guest blogging on ‘leading’ blogs in your niche is a great SEO tactic.

The Next Piece of the Puzzle

Last week I listened to a webinar updating us on the Google ‘Disavow Tool’ by Leslie Rhodie who is regarded by many as the ‘Godfather of SEO’.  Leslie told us that in a post Penguin world, the best way to secure top search engine rankings, generate traffic and increase your sales was to connect with your market by creating and publishing great content that focuses on adding genuine value to the lives of your readers.  We have been preaching this mantra for the last 7 years!

Effective SEO is not about trying to find a loophole in Google’s algorithm and ‘beating the system’, your SEO efforts should be aimed at becoming a trusted and respected leader in your market.
